Privacy Policy

What we collect
We collect only what we need to run Expensease, and it's linked to your account so the app works for you across devices.
- Account & profile: your phone number (used to sign in with a one-time passcode), a display name you choose, and an optional profile photo. We don't store a password; OTP codes are short-lived.
- People & groups: the friends you add, the groups you create or join, and those groups' names and photos.
- Financial content you enter: expenses, amounts, currencies, who paid and who owes, balances, settlements, notes, and the payment-method labels you create.
- Uploads: profile photos, group photos, and any receipts, images, or files you choose to upload.
- Contacts (only if you opt in): if you use "find friends from contacts," phone numbers and emails from your device contacts are used to find matches — see Contacts & finding friends.
- Support messages: if you email us, we keep your message and contact details to reply.
- Limited operational records: minimal internal counts of certain feature use (for example, AI-assisted scans) so we can enforce fair-use limits and keep the service reliable. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising/tracking SDKs.
How we use it
We use your information to provide the app — and for nothing related to advertising or cross-app tracking. Specifically, to:
- sign you in and manage your account;
- split expenses, calculate balances, record settlements, and keep your data in sync;
- show people and groups with their names and avatars;
- run the optional receipt-scan and voice features when you use them;
- respond to support, prevent abuse/fraud, and apply fair-use limits;
- meet legal obligations.
Contacts & finding friends
Finding friends from your contacts is optional and only happens after you grant permission and tap the option in the app.
When you do, the phone numbers and emails from your device contacts are sent to our server only to check which of them are already on Expensease. On the server they are immediately converted to one-way salted hashes, and we match on those hashes — we do not store your raw contact list, build a contact graph, or use your contacts for advertising or tracking. You can delete the matched data at any time from within the app or by emailing us.
Photos & uploads
Profile and group photos are used as avatars inside the app. So that avatars load quickly, these avatar images are served from public storage URLs — which means someone who has a direct image URL could view that avatar image. Expensease has no public feed, profile directory, or search, so there is no way to browse or discover users or their photos in the app.
Receipts and other files you upload are private. They are not served publicly and require authentication to access.
When you add a photo, your device's photo picker is used and we receive only the specific image you choose — we do not get access to your whole photo library.
Expenses & payment labels
Expense details (amounts, currency, descriptions, who paid and who owes), balances, and settlement records are stored to provide the core service. Other members of a split or group can see the shared expenses, balances, and your name and avatar — that is how splitting works.
Payment methods in Expensease are labels you create to organize balances (for example "Cash" or "UPI"). They are not connections to real bank or card accounts. We do not collect bank or card numbers or banking credentials, and Expensease does not move money — it records who owes whom, and you settle outside the app and mark it settled.
AI & voice features
Some optional features use AI processing: scanning receipts/documents, and adding expenses by voice.
When you use them, the relevant content is sent to our AI provider (Google) to extract the expense details and return them to the app — specifically the receipt/document image, or, for voice, the transcribed text plus any friend or group names needed to match participants. Your speech is converted to text using your device's speech recognition. We send only what the feature needs; we do not send your overall balances or your contacts list to the AI provider. These features are subject to fair-use limits.
No ads, tracking, or data sales
Expensease has no ads and no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs. We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell your data. This release has no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Retention & account deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time — in the app via Settings → Delete Account, or by emailing us at email.expensease@gmail.com.
Deleting your account removes or anonymizes your personal information (such as your name, phone number, email, photos, contact-match hashes, and notification tokens).
Shared records: expenses, balances, and settlements you shared with other people are part of their records too, so they may be retained for the group's accounting integrity — but, wherever possible, they no longer identify you (your entries appear as a removed participant).
Your choices & rights
You can edit your profile in the app, and you control the Contacts, Microphone/Speech, and Photos permissions from your device settings — granting or withdrawing them at any time. You can delete your contact-match data, and you can delete your whole account as described above.
Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To make a request, email email.expensease@gmail.com and we'll respond in line with applicable law.
Security
We protect data in transit with TLS, and our database and file-storage providers encrypt data at rest. Access is limited to what's needed to operate the service. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify affected users in line with applicable law after a material security incident.
Where data is processed
We use cloud infrastructure that may process and store data in India and in other regions (for example, Amazon Web Services and Google). By using Expensease you understand your information may be processed in these locations, with safeguards appropriate to the service.
Children
Expensease is intended for adults and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
